Here, we don’t just look at rarity or year of issue. We focus on the communicative act.
What is Psychological Philately?
While "Postal History" deals with facts, dates, and routes, Postal Psychosociology investigates meanings and behaviors. The stamp is the meeting point of two forces:
- The Intent of the State: The issuer using the stamp as a tool for propaganda, pride, or control.
- The Emotion of the Individual: The sender who chooses, applies, and mails a message, charging the object with subjectivity.
How do we analyze the pieces?
To give meaning to each postal document, we apply a three-level analysis:
- Macrosocial Level: We investigate what the stamp reveals about the collective unconscious of its time. Was it a period of fear, national affirmation, or ideological propaganda?
- Microsocial Level: We analyze how the piece shaped human relationships. We focus on the emotional impact of war covers, military aerogrammes, or migration correspondence.
- Behavioral Level: We decipher the sender's psyche through their choices—from the selection of a specific motif to hidden codes, such as tilting a stamp to convey messages of love or defiance.
This blog is an invitation to read between the lines of correspondence and discover the humanity within every postmark.
